Mr David WredeMr C David H Wrede, Consultant Gynaecological Surgeon

MA MB BChir(Cantab.) FRCS(Eng.) MRCOG FRANZCOG

David was born in London to an English mother and Finnish Father who had met each other at the Old Vic Drama School.

While at Cambridge University he dabbled in acting and directing, but decided that careers in the stage were better left to some of his contemporaries such as Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry…

He completed his medical degree at St. Thomas’ Hospital and trained in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (MRCOG) and General Surgery (FRCS) in London and Oxford also spending two years at the Ludwig Institute researching the relationship of Human Papilloma Virus infection to Cervical Cancer. He was an active member of The British Medical Association and was directly involved in the reform of the UK’s post-graduate medical training system as a member of the Calman Committee.

On appointment as a Senior Registrar on the West Midlands training scheme he continued to develop his interest in Gynaecological Cancer prevention and treatment. During this time he was very fortunate to meet a Registrar from Ireland, Orla McNally, who later became his wife.

In 1999 on returning to the UK after having spent a year in Melbourne working at Sunshine, Williamstown and The Mercy Hospitals, he was appointed as a Consultant in O&G with an interest in Oncology and Colposcopy in Fife, Scotland. He moved back to England with his now wife in 2004 to help establish a Gynaecological Cancer Centre in Taunton, Somerset. He led the County’s Dysplasia service and pioneered Laparoscopic Hysterectomy for endometrial cancer, becoming Musgrove Park Hospital’s first Clinical Lead for Minimal Access Surgery.

On Orla’s appointment as Director of Oncology at The Women’s in 2009, David was offered a Staff Specialist post in Gynaecology and became Head of the Dysplasia Service, being awarded his Fellowship of the RANZCOG in 2010. In addition to his various responsibilities at The Women’s he is Honorary Consultant to the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Familial Cancer Clinic and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at The University of Melbourne. He is Principal and Associate investigator on a number of Dysplasia and Oncology research projects, and is very proud to have been one of the accredited surgeons in the LACE study investigating the benefits of laparoscopic surgery in endometrial cancer.

His major clinical interests are now centered on the prevention of Gynaecological cancer, but he has wide-ranging experience in all forms of Gynaecological surgery, especially complex open cases, laparoscopic hysterectomy and risk-reduction procedures and the use of Laser and electro-surgery in the treatment of cervical pre-cancer.

He is continuing to adjust to his daughter’s new accent and vocabulary…
